Garden Route storage guide
How to clear a storage unit without losing track of anything
A controlled sequence for inventory, owner decisions, safe sorting, sales, donations, removal, and final handover.
Define the finish line
Confirm the handover date, facility rules, access hours, and whether the unit must be swept or inspected. Ask what needs to be returned, such as keys, locks, or access cards.
If the unit will stay open while goods are sold, set a firm review date so listings do not keep the rental running without a decision.
Protect people and property first
Do not enter an unstable, damp, contaminated, pest-affected, or tightly packed unit without assessing the risk. Heavy furniture, stacked boxes, broken glass, chemicals, batteries, and unknown containers may need specialist handling or additional people.
Keep the access path clear. Use suitable lifting equipment and do not arrange buyer collections until collection can happen safely.
Photograph before moving
Take overview photographs from the entrance and then work in sections. Give each item or sensible group an identifier. Photograph labels, damage, and important details that affect a decision or sale description.
Avoid placing personal information in public listing photographs. Documents, addresses, family photographs, registration numbers, and account details should be protected.
Sort in a controlled sequence
Use five working zones:
- Keep.
- Sell.
- Give.
- Clear.
- Decision needed.
Work through one area at a time. Do not combine approved and unapproved goods in the same removal load.
Match the sales plan to the deadline
Bulky goods may be easiest to sell from the storage facility, if the facility permits safe buyer collections. Smaller items may be grouped or moved to a suitable approved staging location.
Record the agreed price authority, collection arrangements, payment method, and what happens if the buyer does not arrive.
Confirm donation and recycling destinations
Contact recipients before loading. Confirm item condition, quantity, collection or delivery, and opening hours. For recycling or specialist disposal, keep the destination in the outcome record.
Close with a reconciliation
Before handing back the unit:
- Compare the inventory with the final destinations.
- Resolve every decision-needed item.
- Remove approved remaining goods.
- Sweep and photograph the empty unit.
- Complete the facility handover.
- Share the sale record, agreed costs, and final outcome summary.
A careful close protects the owner from uncertainty after the unit is gone.
